Excerpt

 

          They started out across the undiscovered terrain. Trees jutted out into the settling darkness and sat completely still. At first it was almost eerily silent, but after walking continuously for about five minutes, someone stepped on a large twig and it snapped, cracking against the quiet. Everyone yelped and jumped, each letting out their own chuckle when they realized it was just their own human nature. They were just about to continue their journey when Ambrose’s expression changed to one of horror. She pointed a shaking finger upward and everyone’s gazes followed. 

          Killian’s heart dropped instantly into his stomach. Standing on a particularly thick limb in a tree just behind them, with a shroud of ravens flapping around him, was a shadowy figure. “The Raven Man,” Killian whispered. 

          “No way,” Anslem murmured. 
 

          Suddenly, the figure pointed down at them and the ravens swopped down on command.     
 

           “Run!” Ambrose screamed. 
 

           The group broke out in all directions. Killian had to bet that everyone believed they were going in the right direction, but horrified and stuck in the dark in an unknown territory, likely everyone was running even deeper into The Raven Man’s territory.
